We are currently removing, restoring, and reinstalling the dalle de verre windows at Saint Joseph Hospital. They are being moved from the old chapel to the newly constructed chapel.
Originally created by Gabriel Loire of Chartres, France, in 1963, they were made with a concrete matrix surrounding the 1” thick glass pieces. Not long after this, an epoxy resin was developed that has replaced concrete as the matrix for faceted glass (the alternative name for dalle de verre).
Colorado’s dry climate has kept the windows at Saint Joseph from too much deterioration. Concrete-based dalle de verre windows found in more humid climates have suffered due to corrosion of the metal rebar imbedded within the concrete.
It has been an honor to work with these windows to help extend their lifespan for future generations to enjoy.
This chapel is beautiful, can’t wait to see the new one once construction’s over!
